Introduction to the Holocaustic Necrometal Legends
In 1982, around the time black metal was born, in Finland Pimeyden Nekroteurastaja formed a
band called Äkkikuolema. At
first the chaotic style of playing (hardly to be called music) had no name, but later it was
called the Necrometal of Darkness, or by the Finnish term tuhomurha. The band kept a
very low profile over the years, and suffered from a lot of setbacks. In 1987 the band was
thought completely disbanded. But this was not the case. Largely due to The Ympärileikkaaja
Äkkikuolema was brought over to the 90s, with the Korpisaatana demo, recorded in the
twilight of the decade.
His chaotic, fiercely inhuman drumming and screaming vocals defined the new sound of
tuhomurha. With lyrics like in the song "En sång av hungrike hunder - koirat
tappaa kaikki!" he proved to be one of the most insane and evil people ever to have lived.
Without The Ympärileikkaaja, Äkkikuolema would never have achieved the unbearable
chaotic darkness and terror Äkkikuolema had in its darkest time.
Greifi Kyrvänkatkoja joined the band after the departure of The Ympärileikkaaja.
He pushed the screaming to the limits of demonkind and every time he picked up the guitar,
he produced the most chaotic non-riffs never heard by mortals. He wrote the classic lyrics
to songs such as "Anno Saatana" and "Kuolema Suksilla."
An Unholy Union
Finland is a dark country, neighbor to the infamous Norway, where black winter nights drive
people to violence and suicide. The knife is the usual weapon, but in the case of Äkkikuolema,
stronger weapons are used. It was the case with Greifi Kyrvänkatkoja, who liked to use
an axe, or a chainsaw in close combat. It is said that he killed another band member who
disappeared, Tuhomurhaaja af Void, because he did not agree with his deodorant. Greifi never
used deodorant. Allegedly he stored the corpse in a freezer and slowly cut it into little
pieces, and sent out a demo packed inside Tuhomurhaaja's stomach.
The Ympärileikkaaja often disappeared into the forests. He was very a mysterious person.
More than once he has been reported to be dead, but still he was often mentioned to be in the
line-up for new demo releases, only to be replaced by someone else only moments before the
recording. The only Äkkikuolema demo I am aware of he has ever performed on is the
legendary Korpisaatana demo. The Ympärileikkaaja has been around for a long time, as he
recorded his first demo back in 1976.
Both knew each other, but for some reason never performed together. But without doubt they
can be titled Holocaustic Necrometal Legends. They influenced each other much over the years,
contributing to the pure essence evil that is known as Äkkikuolema.
The Very End
The circumstances around their deaths are mostly unknown. The Ympärileikkaaja died in
a car crash, along with three other members of the band, in December 1998. There was an
explosion caused by dynamite in the trunk and there was very little remaining of the corpses.
Less than a month after this Greifi Kyrvänkatkoja did himself in, recording the whole
process on tape, titled as an "outro" for his solo demo.
